THE RIPARIAN PLANTING PROGRAMME
Determined to right the wrongs of the past a Riparian Planting Programme was initiated on Taruna
Farm in 2020.
With the financial help and encouragement of the Waikato Regional Council, 40ha of native bush, wetlands, and steep gullies have been fenced off, retired, and planted in native trees and shrubs.
The stock have no access now to the native bush or the streams. Remnants of the original native bush have been fenced off for protection and understoreys are completely full.
To date we have planted nearly nine thousand trees. The Grandchildren have been involved in tree planting days and pest traplines.
To our surprise we have noticed vast improvement; without stock in the streams, the koura, and the eels have flourished.
We are helping to provide bushland corridors from Mount Maungatautari, some 20km away, for native bird species; including the recently observed and elusive kaka.
We are committed to the protection of the environment in which we live by protecting the land and the water quality and to continue with the tree planting programme.
