THE SHEEP AND WOOL
Taruna Farm winters a flock of 1200 high-performance Coopworth ewes and 350 hogget replacements; half of which are mated for breeding replacements and the balance to a terminal sire the Polled Dorset.
All lambs are sold prime to Silver Fern Farms. Our second shear wool which was once one of our major exports has suffered over the years from a lack of marketing opportunities and competition from synthetics to where we find ourselves in a position where it is a challenge to cover shearing costs with our wool prices. We are hopeful with a move towards more sustainable and natural products and a worldwide recognition of wools amazing properties that things will improve for all wool growers.
